Deer in Headlights

2021 | Limited Edition Etching Prints and LED Mixed Media Collage

“Deer in Headlights” is a mixed media piece regarding the current Covid-19 pandemic of 2020-2021.  As a society we were blinded by Covid in 2020 and it’s uncertainty. Humanity is portrayed as the deer with its future to be unknown.  The car represents the year 2021 and what the future will bring for all mankind. “EY’ 2021” reads the license plate.  Do the headlights of 2021 lead the deer to safety or not?  That is up to the viewer.  We are the deer in headlights with unknown futures.

“Deer in Headlights”  LED mixed media collage is created with several etching prints from the limited edition series “Deer in Headlights”, printed Spring 2021. Each print is cut and collaged in a multi-layered shadow box frame. Plexiglass holds the collage together on 3 separate layers. Spacers separate the plexi panels to add a 3-D effect.  Behind the furthest most plexi piece, remote control lights are layered behind the collage illuminating the image.  It is up to the viewer to control the image with remote.

Moon Series

The Moon is a one-of-a-kind collage series that showcases full moons in nature during the year.  Each print is separate collage of a full moon it represents per season.  Hunter’s Moon. Flower Moon, and Blue Moon are represented in this series. Each moon in series is printed on paper with a dehydrated orange as a stamp. Other elements in each collage include etching and monotype.  All artwork is framed with a re-purposed frame that has been sanded down and stained to enhance each piece.

These little fawns love their beer! Blue Moon Hefeweizen of course!.  In lunar retrospect, blue moons are full moons that grace the night twice in the same month.  Dehydrated Oranges are printed making double moons during the month.  Everything is double-ing -up for this piece. Once in a Blue Moon Deer, Hold My Beer! . This mixed media collage is made with several etching prints.  All the pieces of the collage have been sealed with bee’s wax and assembled on three plexi-glass sheets housed in a repurposed frame.

Hunters Moon | 3-D  LED Lighted Collage | 2021

As the October moon, Hunter’s Moon shows the season of hunting to prepare for winter. Undergrowing brush is dead where the prey hides.  Now, deer are more visible to hunters being led by the glowing moon lighting the visual path. Hunters Moon is a LED, 3 layer plexi-glass collage.  Dehydrated oranges are stamped on paper to represent the moon while the deer and trees are etching prints.  The background consists of a monotype with bell pepper seeds for stars. All the pieces of the collage have been sealed with bee’s wax before assembly

Auto Graveyard Series

 2020 | Dry-Point Etching | Limited Edition Series

This series is a documentation of time and the aging of old automobiles.  The classic cars are in Point Blank Texas near Lake Livingston.  All the vehicles are a visual attraction for the Hilltop, a honky-tonk icehouse in the area.  None of the autos run, tires are flat and buried by the ground due to them sitting in their final resting spot for years outside the bar.   Even though they are all rusted, broken and buried, each vehicle still has its original beauty and I wanted to show that in this series.

Camaro Made Collection

2020 | Linocut Limited Edition Series | Mixed Media Collages

“Camaro Made Collage” is a mixed media artwork that is a finale to my lino-cut print series “Camaro Made”.  I wanted to elevate this print series by using the rest of my not-so-perfect prints from this series to create a mixed media piece.  This collage has an interesting backstory concerning its creation.  The inspiration behind the classic Camaro prints was a pop-up quarantine classic car parade thru the neighborhood.  As a photographer I was drawn to document all of the classic vehicles parading thru and the unity of the neighborhood getting together socially distanced in an uncertain time.  While in quarantine, I also discovered how to use my car as a printing press and print lino-cuts.  I thought it was fitting to print a classic Camaro I saw in the parade, with my Camaro, hence the name “Camaro Made”.  Each of the original lino-cut prints are a carved six-color layer print.  I also printed several outlines and experimented with color on them by blowing bubbles mixed with food coloring on prints for a transparent color.  I used a total of seven prints cut up and pieced back together like a puzzle with the wrong pieces.  I wanted a sense of motion with this work, so with paper placement and planning I was able to execute a Camaro raceway on my painted and gold leafed panel.

Innocence In Wake of Disaster

Innocence in Wake of Disaster is a series of painting created in 2020.  It is a reflection of innocence and youth from Sarah's Childhood during a tragic flood event.  As youthful children see the flood waters as a fun new play area, they are innocent to imagine how devastating the tragic flood at hand really is.
